2018 Hyundai Elantra vs Ford Focus

The Ford Focus has been one of the most popular sedans in the world, but this current version is showing its age and, with so many on the roads, pretty well-known. If you want something different than the Focus, you might want to consider the 2018 Hyundai Elantra. Let's see how it stacks up against the current Ford Focus.

2018 Hyundai Elantra vs Ford Focus

Looks: Hyundai Elantra

These compact sedans and hatches give designers a chance to produce sporty, desirable cars that can be both fun and affordable. That combination appeals to a large audience, which the Focus has been doing for a long time. The top of the range ST models are still very desirable, but models lower down the trim spectrum are starting to look a little mundane.

The current Elantra isn't perhaps as daring and adventurous as some of its predecessors, but it's still a handsome car. In fact, the classic look of the Elantra probably attracts more buyers than you might think. The Hyundai has a more contemporary look than the Focus because the Ford Focus is starting to show its age.

Costs: Hyundai Elantra

A big reason why cars like the Focus and the Elantra sell in such big numbers is because they are affordable to buy and affordable to run. The Elantra's starting MSRP of just $16,950 gives it a major advantage, since that's $1000 cheaper than the entry level Focus.

Of course, fuel economy is another factor in deciding how economical a car is to run, and the EPA says the best the Focus can offer is 30 mpg in the city, 40 mpg on the highway and 34 mpg combined. That's good, but Elantra Eco models go even further with 32 mpg in the city, 40 mpg on the highway and 35 mpg combined.

Features: Hyundai Elantra

Cars are now generally better equipped as standard than they've ever been, but it still pays to see which models offer the most for your money. If you expect the Hyundai's lower starting price to be clawed back by the manufacturer because they cut back on features and equipment, you'll be pleased to find that's not the case. The majority of buyers will go for the Elantra SEL, which includes: a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, 16-inch wheels, cruise control, Bluetooth and more.

The Ford Focus SE trim is the equivalent to the Elantra SEL and comes with a similar set of standard features, but the Hyundai continues to offer comparable performance for less price.

Interior Space: Hyundai Elantra

Compact cars like the Elantra and the Focus seem to offer more space than we've any right to expect inside, so we expect a lot now. One drawback to the aging design of the Focus is its use of space, when compared to the more modern packaging of the Elantra.

The Hyundai has more passenger volume overall at 95.8 cu.-ft., compared to the 90.7 cubes of the Ford. That translates into more head and leg room in both the front and the rear of the Hyundai. The same is true with trunk space as the Elantra sedan boasts 14.4 cu.-ft. to the 13.2 cu.-ft. of the Focus.

The Ford Focus is still a good compact with plenty to offer, and the Hyundai has no real answer at the moment to its incredible ST and RS versions. But the more run-of-the-mill models are what most buyers purchase, and in that respect the 2018 Hyundai Elantra outscores the Ford Focus by just about every measure.
